Matt Kemp Powers Los Angeles Dodgers to sweep of Colorado Rockies in 7-6 win
Matt Kemp’s grand slam in the top of the 3rd inning all but put the game away handing the Dodgers a 5-1 lead of which they almost lost but ultimately pulled out giving the Dodgers their 78′s win on the season and putting them another 3 game sweep away from .500.
With the game tied 1-1 Kemp got a 0-1 fastball and hit it over the fence to right center. It’s been a rough up n down year for Kemp but he said “”I’m just trying to take something positive into the offseason and go from there,” then added that he wanted to “End strong and give ‘em a little preview of what is to come next year.”
When asked about the next season, Kemp in his usual upbeat tone proclaimed that James Loney would hit 20 home runs and when asked how many home-runs he’d hit he said “40″ and when asked how many steals he’d get he said “40″ then added “”I have to pay the fans back, man,” Kemp said. “They deserve it.”
This has been one very unsatisfying year, so we definitely deserve it. LA needs a hero next year because it looks as if we’ll have to put up with Frank McCourt and Ned Colletti for one more season, and Matt Kemp can be that hero if he goes on a 40-40 campaign. I look forward to rooting him on in his quest, and even if he falls short, he’s still my favorite Dodger.
Misery Loves Company – Los Angeles Dodgers defeat Colorado Rockies to knock Rockies out of playoffs
After going up 5-2 after the 3rd inning, I walked away from the game thinking that this was over but alas, the Dodgers are full of surprises. After scoring 1 in the top of the 7th, the Dodgers surrendered 4 runs after the 7th inning stretch tying the game 6-6 when I went back and saw the score I turned it off again.
Of course something big happened the inning I turn it off, that same inning I gave up on the team, they didn’t give up on themselves and scored 2 runs to take the lead for the rest of the game, thus sending the Rockies home along with the Dodgers for the post-season.
The team decided to play long ball today and hit 4 home-runs traveling an average of 430 feet, 2 by Casey Blake, one by Matt Kemp and James Loney’s 10th, finally hitting double figures.
That now leaves the Dodgers 77-81 and needing to win 4 straight to finish at .500…hey we all need a goal.
Los Angeles Dodgers win 3-1 over Colorado Rockies to push Rockies to 4.5 Back
I guess the Dodgers do want to play spoiler but to me it’s against the wrong team. They had a chance to make sure the San Francisco Giants don’t make the playoffs, play for a little Dodger pride and got beat up by the Giants.
Now against the Rockies, they decide to deny Ubaldo Jimenez his 20th win and also tell the Rockies that it won’t be easy catching up to the rest of the NL West while we’re standing in your way. With 2 RBI’s from Casey “The Beard” Blake, and 8 strong innings the Dodger defeated the Rockies 3-1 with Lily making a case to be back in the rotation next year and Casey showing he’s still got a little spunk left in his beard, I mean bat.
Next up in the rotation as the Dodgers continue to try to spoil the Rockies season are Hiroki Kuroda and Clayton Kershaw. With 5 games to go and the Dodgers at 76-81 and needing a 5 game winning streak to get to 81-81 the quest to .500 begins again tonight!
Los Angeles Dodgers Lose to Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4: Dodgers Blow It Again
Through 8 innings Chad Billingsly dominated the Arizona Diamondbacks in a pretty meaningless game. After 8 innings the score was 4-1, the last couple years when the Los Angeles Dodgers had a lead heading into the 7th, 8th or 9th innings, it was pretty much over.
Not so much this year, it seems like Joe Torre is playing mad scientist and experiments with players who have shown all season to be unreliable. So with the score 4-1 in the bottom of the 8th inning he ends up using 3 pitchers.
First is Ronald Belisario who with his 4.96 ERA has blown his share of leads this season is only used against one batter pinch hitter Augie Ojeda who grounds out to first. Next Sherrill goes against Stephen Drew who immediately walks him the next Batter is Tony Abreu who hasn’t hit a ball out of the park all year, so what does Sherrill do? He gives up a home run to Tony Abreau, then a single to Kelly Johnson. That’s 3 batters, not one out.
Now, unfortunately in the box scores Jonathan Broxton, who gives up a home run to Chris Young to give the Diamondbacks the lead, will get the loss but it’s all really attributed to George Sherrill who faced 3 batters, and didn’t get a single batter out raising his ERA to 7.08. Look at that again, 7.08, if there’s any indicated that Joe Torre has gone senile it’s the fact that he’s put a guy with a 7.08 ERA in 62, count them 62 games!
He’s been so ridiculously unreliable this year any team with a sense of wanting to win games would’ve benched this guy or designated him for assignment to the minors, or better yet cut him but no, future possible Hall of Fame manage Joe Torre keeps using this gas can in close games. He may go 3-4 straight games without even giving up a hit, but then he’ll have a game like this where he’s just horrible. The guy can’t throw strikes, can’t get anybody out, nor can he even strike anyone out. He’s possibly one of the worst pitchers in Major League Baseball right now. George Sherrill doesn’t deserve a roster spot next year but unfortunately he’s under contract for next year and Ned Colletti doesn’t seem to understand this guy is done, let’s hope Donnie Baseball has some sense and tells Ned where he can put Sherrill.
Los Angeles Dodgers trade Don Mattingly’s son Preston Mattingly to Cleveland Indians
On the surface, this look like a trade of one team getting rid of a player with whom they’re unhappy with to a team who also has a player with whom they’re unhappy with. In the deal the Dodgers receive Romon Pena a left handed hitting outfielder who has only played in 21 games this season.
But when you think about the fact that his father was just hired as the Dodgers manager and also 1B/3B Brett Wallach, the son of Tim Wallach was also traded, you start to wonder if they were moved so there would be no nepotism charges. Preston surely would never be good enough to be a major leaguer but would his dad give him a shot in the majors just because that’s his son? It’s possible and to avoid that he could’ve been moved. I doubt the same for Brett Wallach as he actually has some talent and his dad is only the AAA manger but you never know.
